DAS announces Astronomical Observing 101 Program

Discover the Night Sky with the Denver Astronomical Society!

The Denver Astronomical Society (DAS) is excited to announce its Astronomical Observing 101 program for members! This seven-night series is perfect for anyone who wants to learn how to explore the night sky, whether with just their eyes, binoculars, or a telescope. Classes will take place on Tuesday nights at 7:00 PM from March 11 to April 22.

What Will You Learn?

Each session will focus on a different aspect of astronomy, helping you build skills and confidence in observing the night sky. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:

🌙 Session 1: Introduction (March 11, 7:00-9:00 PM)
Learn about the amazing objects visible in the night sky, including the Moon, planets, stars, galaxies, and more! You’ll also discover how the sky changes with the seasons.

👀 Session 2: Observing with the Naked Eye (March 18, 7:00-9:00 PM)
Find out how to navigate the night sky without any special equipment! You’ll learn how to locate objects using celestial coordinates and angles.

🔭 Session 3: Optical Observing Tools (March 25, 7:00-9:00 PM)
Explore different types of telescopes and binoculars, understand how they work, and learn about the DAS telescope loaner program.

🌌 Session 4: Outdoor Lab Night (April 1, 7:00-9:00 PM) Held at Chamberlin Observatory
Learn how to set up, align, and properly focus your telescope!

📋 Session 5: Observation Planning (April 8, 7:00-9:00 PM)
Discover how to plan your own stargazing sessions using helpful apps, websites, and magazines.

📸 Session 6: Basic Astrophotography (April 15, 7:00-9:00 PM)
Learn how to take photos of celestial objects with a DSLR or mobile phone, including special tips for photographing the Sun and the Milky Way.

🌠 Session 7: Deep Sky Astrophotography (April 22, 7:00-9:00 PM)
Take your astrophotography to the next level with an introduction to capturing galaxies and nebulae! You’ll also learn about the DAS Astrophotography Special Interest Group (ASIG).
