Presentation:
“Exploring the Universe with the SETI Institute: From Exoplanets to E.T.”
with Dr. Lauren Srgo – SETI Institute
Note: Dr. Srgo’s presentation was arranged with the assistance of a Colorado SETI group that is just now being organized. Membership in the group is open to anyone affiliated with the Denver Astronomical Society. Participation is informal, cost-free, and without obligation. For more information about the SETI Institute and its work, visit www.seti.org. To learn more about the Colorado affinity group, contact the coordinator in Denver, Ed Dauer, at edward.dauer@du.edu.
Our Speaker:
Dr. Lauren Sgro is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the SETI Institute, working alongside Unistellar to build their network of citizen astronomers and process the results from observers worldwide. She currently leads this citizen science network’s Exoplanets Program, where participants record transit data for known and candidate exoplanets. She graduated with her PhD in Physics from the University of Georgia in 2022, where she studied debris disks around red dwarfs. Lauren is also a science communicator and writer who has written for various outlets, from student-run blogs to Sky & Telescope magazine. Recently, she was appointed as the Outreach Manager for LaserSETI, the SETI Institute’s optical SETI survey.
One of her favorite things about astronomy, and science in general, is sharing it with others through writing or public outreach events. In her copious leisure time, she likes to read, practice circus arts, and spend time with friends and family.
